June 14, 1913.
Mr. Theo. Gegoux,
Santa Monica, Cal.,
Dear Mr. Gegoux:
In reply to yours of May 31st, will say that the " trail" leading to the finding of the McCormick portrait was lost, but I have recently struck it again, and hope to succeed this time in getting it.
I have the portrait of L. M. Starr, but upon investigation I find that it was A. M. Starr, his brother, who was one time a mayor of this, city.
During the past few months I have tried repeatedly to get a clue to Farrar, through Massachusetts sources, as he came to Oregon from the vicinity of Lowell, and at one time was a protégé of a famous lawyer of Boston by the name of Benjamin F. Butler, who later on became a famous or in-famous general of the Civil War of 1861-1865.
The Wasserman portrait I am sure to get, but the delay has been the result of the prolonged absence of the member of his family who has been away from the city.
A. K. Wait was an acting mayor for a time, succeeding, or, rather, as I remember, was chosen to succeed Thomas J. Holmes, who died during the night after his election.
Simon B. Marye, was elected mayor in November 1852, to succeed A. C. Bonnell, who resigned.  He did have relatives in this, city, but that is not certain now, although recently I learned that some of them had returned, or about to return.
I hope to be able to report further progress within two or three weeks.
Yours truly,
(Himes)
